Private Samuel A. March, a painter from East Whiteland, enlisted in Company C, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry at the age of 19, on Sept. 11, 1861, for 3 yrs.; He was wounded in the right foot during action at Foster's Place, Bermuda Hundred, Va., on May 18, 1864 and was discharged at the U. S. Hospital in Philadelphia on Sept. 2, 1864, at the expiration of his term.

( It appears that on March 31, 1865 he re-enlisted in Company G , 110th Pa. Infantry at Philadelphia. The Company mustered out on June 28th 1865).

Double Surprise- On Monday evening a double surprise party took place at the residence of Samuel A. March, of this borough. The event was on the occassion of Mr. March's forty-first natal day. the surprise party was composed of the members of McCall Post No. 31, G.A.R. The other gentleman who was surprised on the same occasson, and at the same place, was Harry C. Reagan, whose birthday will be on next Saturday. A very enjoyable evening was passed and there was a handsome supper spread in the dining room to which the soldier boys died complete justice. Wm. H. Turner presented Mr. March on behalf of his wife with a handsome pair of gold rimmed spectacles. After this presentation comrade Turner produced a handsome godl toothpick, which was presented to Mr. Reagan, also the gift of his wife. After the presentation and accompanying speeches the party enjoyed themselves in talking over old war days and before the midnight hour truck they all wended their way to their home.
