Paternal lineage of JOSEPH³ L CHILDS: (Issac², unknown¹ Childs from Massachusetts)
Maternal lineage: JOSEPH³ L CHILDS ( Eliza² Jane Stoner, Ruth¹ Franz)

JOSEPH L. CHILDS (78) was born Oct. 6, 1854 in Indiana the youngest of four children (Andrew J., William M., George P. ,Joseph L.) born to Isaac Childs and Eliza Jane Stoner. His parents were both born in Ohio. Perhaps near Shelby, Ohio as that is where Joseph's father, Isaac Childs, married ELIZABETH "ELIZA" JANE STONER, dau. of John J. Stoner and Ruth Frantz.

In the History of Shelby County, Ohio and Representative Citizens 1838-1912 there is a mention of a George Childs on p. 105. "ordered that the clerk grant receipts, one to George Childs for plank furnished for public buildings to offset against donation to the county seat. George Childs $20.00"

At any rate, in 1856 when Joseph Childs was 1 1/2 yrs old his family of four boys moved from Indiana to Jefferson Township, Harrison County, Iowa. Harrison County, Iowa where Joseph grew up.

On Aug. 4, 1878 at the home of Rev. A.F. Normans in Harrison County, IA Joseph Childs married BLANCHE CLEMENTINA "TINA" PECKENPAUGH. "Tina" was the daughter of Elijah Ridenour Peckenpaugh and Caroline Rowe also of Harrison Co. Iowa.

In a letter written to my mother (Esther Childs) Joseph's "Joe's" granddaughter, Audrey Childs Meyer, wrote that she was taller than Joseph (her grandfather) at the age of 12.

All seven of Joseph and "Tina's" children were born in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa. The grandparents on both sides resided in Harrison County, Iowa. (It should be noted that Joseph's older brother, William, also married a cousin of "Tina" Peckenpaugh, named Minnie Barton Peckenpaugh).

About 1900 Joseph and Tina moved to near Fedora, Beaver Township, Miner County, South Dakota where they homesteaded 2 quarters of land and ran the Beaver Township Post office and local general store. Their daughter, Luella, carried the mail in the summer time, when she was not teaching school. She used a horse and buggy to and from Fulton, SD. She picked up mail at three different places and brought mail to those places on the return trip. In 1909 Joseph was Chairman of the Miner County Board of Commissioners.

In the early days of stage coaches, a "Star Route" for mail and passengers ran from Fulton to Beaver with a stop at Fairview in Hanson Co. The Star Route carrier was Joseph L. Childs. Mrs. Childs, "Tina" was Postmistress of Beaver, Beaver Township.
