Lucy Lowrance Dies in Wreck

The Hamilton Herald-News January 5, 1978

Lucy Elizabeth Lowrance, 57, became Hamilton's only holiday traffic fatality when she was killed in a one-car wreck Friday night, Dec. 30.

The accident was discovered by Ralph Lee about 8 a.m. Saturday when he saw the rear end of Mrs. Lowrance's car protruding from some underbrush under a tree near Highway 36 about 200 yards west of the intersection of the highway with the Pottsville road.

Apparently Mrs. Lowrance lost control of her car in Friday night's dense fog. It plunged through a fence on the north side of the highway and crashed into a tree where it was concealed by dense underbrush.

All local law officers investigated the accident. County Judge V. H. Jenkins, after talking with people who had seen Mrs. Lowrance Friday night, set the time of the accident at about 8 o'clock in the evening.

It appeared that Mrs. Lowrance died almost immediately from multiple head injuries.

Mrs. Lowrance was manager of the Dairy Queen in Hamilton, a position she had held since its opening day. It was thought that she was traveling to her home west of Hamilton when the fatal accident occurred.

Funeral services were held in the Riley Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, 1978. The Rev. Robert Lindsey officiated. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Jack Hodgkins, Garland Anglin, rank Jeffrey, Jess Pruitt, J. W. Harrison, and Garland Anglin, Jr.

Mrs. Lowrance was the daughter of James Edwin Crain and the late Clara Loyd Crain. She was born in the Blue Ridge community of Hamilton County Jan. 9, 1920.

She was first married to W. O. Pearce of Hamilton. After he died she married Oscar Lowrance of Hamilton. He also preceded her in death as did one son, Joe Lynn Pearce, who was also killed in a car wreck.

Survivors include Mrs. Lowrance's father, Edwin Crain of Hamilton; two sons, James Obie Pearce of Midlothian and Kenneth Wayne Lowrance of Hamilton; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Lowrance was a member of Lund Valley Baptist Church.
