Tampa was the staging area for the invasion of Cuba. The 32nd mustered in May 14,1898, left May 19 for Tampa, Fl. The 32nd was one of the earliest regiments moved to Camp Fernandian, Amelia Island, Fl. Also referred to as Camp Amelia. July 19, 1898 Tampa Tribune reports all troops in Tampa had been ordered to move to Fernandina because of health reasons.
It was assigned to service in Cuba but never left the United States. While enroute to Tampa, its transport ship collided with another ship. The regiment was unloaded, and never left the port. After remaining in Florida for awhile, the regiment was transferred to Fort McPherson, Ga., where it remained until September, then returned to Michigan and was disbanded between October 25 and November 9, 1898.
