P. C. VanDohla, 84, Dies Here Sunday. Funeral services for Peter C. VanDohla, 84 year old pioneer who died here Sunday were held at Shirley Monday at 2 p.m. by Rev. J. W. Carleton, pastor of Missionary Baptist Church, Leedey, assisted by Rev. W. J. Gray, pastor, Leedey Methodist Church. Burial was in the Shirley Cemetery. Peter C. VanDohla was born in Dearborn County, Indiana, October 5, 1851 and died at Leedey, Oklahoma December 15, 1935, age 84 years, 2 month, 10 days. He married Sallie C. Ferguson July 25, 1877 at Kingsville, Missouri. To this union were born 6 children, 4 of which preceded the father to the Great Beyond. At the age of 28 years, Mr. VanDohla made a profession of religion and stood firm for his belief until the end. He moved his family to Thomas, Oklahoma in 1902, living there about 2 years, then moved to Day County and filed on a claim in 1904. He served as Postmaster at Grow for 7 years, holding the place until the post office was discontinued. Those left to mourn his going is his companion, one daughter, Mrs. A. R. Newton, Leedey; a son, John VanDohla, New Mexico; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 2 brothers, Charley and Lee, Sapula, Oklahoma; one sister, Mrs. Mollie Sours, Tulsa; and a number of distant relatives and many friends.
