Orin William Morgan passed away in Roseburg, Oregon while on a family vacation near Crater Lake, Oregon just two days shy of his 88th birthday. Alice, his faithful and loving wife of 56 years, was at his side when Orin passed away peacefully.

Orin is survived by his wife Alice and their sons, Charles, Michael, and Russell, and two grandchildren, Alexander and Katryna. He is also survived by numerous family members and relatives in the western U.S. Orin was born in Lewellen, Nebraska, and raised in a sod house on a homestead in North Platte. During his formative years, Orin learned the "Midwest" values of kindness, gentleness, honesty, and integrity. He lived these values throughout his life, and passed them on to his sons. He also passed on his great work ethic and passion for perfection.

After Orin served his country during World War II as a Mess Sergeant in France and Germany, he followed his brothers and sisters and relocated to Reno, where he continued his career as a carpenter. Orin's high quality work and craftsmanship can be found in hundreds of homes throughout the Reno, Sparks, and Carson City area. Orin's ability to turn any kind of wood into a spectacular cabinet or fine piece of furniture is well known. Some of these items will become family heirlooms. In Orin's view, "If it can't be made from wood, it's not worth making." This and his other construction skills was something Orin taught his sons and many other carpenters during his life. Orin, a member of the Carpenters Union Local 971, was especially proud when he earned his 60 year membership pin. Orin was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Reno, where his craftsmanship lives on in the alter, sanctuary, and children's areas. He was also involved in the Kairos Outreach Prison Ministry, making thousands of crosses for the participants.

Orin was a great father, who worked hard to provide for his family. He made sure he attended all his children's baseball and football games, athletic events, as well as graduations and other special occasions. He took an interest in his son's endeavors, and encouraged them to always do their best. He was always there, rock-steady, when things didn't go well. His silent strength helped smooth out life's ups and downs. Orin became a competitive walker in his late 60's and early 70's, earning several awards for placing high in his age group. He was an avid baseball fan, particularly of the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. He enjoyed listening to, watching, and attending baseball games. It was the only place he would eat a hot dog.

Orin was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Morgan and Catherine Rebecca Sanderson Morgan; his brother, Robert; and his sisters, Deva, Pluma, and Thelma. He is survived by his brother Jacob of Reno, sister Madge of Tehachapi, CA, sister Nelle Nora of Los Angeles, CA, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Orin was a kind and generous man. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to be near him. He was a man of few words, but those who knew him best could read his facial expressions like a book, and knew exactly what he was thinking. He thought all he spoke, but did not speak all he thought. Orin was a great man, a patient teacher, and a remarkable role model. Orin left our world a better place than when he arrived in it, for which his friends and family will be eternally grateful. The final score was 2 to 1 ½.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Walton Funeral Home, 875 West Second St, in Reno. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2008 at Walton's with burial to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
