Political philosopher, leader of the Philippine Revolution, national hero of the Philippines. Apolinario Mabini was known as the "Sublime Paralytic". Although paralyzed from the waist down from polio he became one of the Philippines greatest leaders and is considered to be the "Brains" behind the Philippine-American War 1899 to 1902. He led the cabinet of Emilio Aguinaldos government and was given the title Prime Minister. During this time he wrote the True Decalogue and the Constitution of the First Philippine Republic. Mabini was believed by United States forces to be the brains behind Aguinaldo. In December 1899, Mabini was captured by American forces. He was granted amnesty and was set free, but he would later be arrested for his journalism against United States rule and promotion of continued resistance against the American forces. His sentence was exile, and they shipped him to Guam. In 1903 he was given permission to return to the Philippines if he pledged his allegiance to the United States. With failing health and not wanting to die outside of his country he gave in. Shortly after his return he contracted cholera and died a few days later. He was initially buried in the Chinese Cemetery in Manila. His body was later exhumed and transferred to the Mabini Shrine located in his birth place Talaga, Tanauan City, Batangas.
