Son of Hillrie W. Barbee and Eleanor (Mattie) Higgs. He was raised Boone Co. AR. He married Sarah Perlina "Sallie" Maddox on October 6, 1878 at Cave Creek, Newton, AR.

8 Children: Councel, Mary E. "Mollie", William Robert, Mattie Lou, Nellie Carol, George Isaac, James Elmer and Joseph Hayden "Hade". All the children except Hade were born in AR. Hade was born in Indian Territory near what is now Durant, OK. Mollie lived about 10 months and is buried in Western Grove Cemetery, Newton Co., AR. In about 1892/1893 they left AR and went west into OK. Their trail was marked by two of their children: Councel died at about 14 years of age (1893) and was buried in Coker Cemetery, Nowatta Co., OK. Joseph Hayden was born in 1894. They settled in the area of Okra, Eastland, TX.

It is said that Benjamin sure could play the fiddle.
