Our father, grandfather, brother and friend, Al Albertson, passed away Sept. 4, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer. He faced his final journey with the same dignity and determination that defined his life.
Al was born in Idaho Falls on Jan. 16, 1937, to Francis and Violet Albertson. The family moved to Pocatello when he was a teenager. He proudly served two tours with the U.S. Army and was active in a number of local veteran service groups.
During his life, Al worked as surveyor for the Idaho Department of Transportation, the U.S. Forest Service, Morris-Knudsen of Boise, and also operated his own business in California and Colorado. One of his greatest adventures was a road construction project through the African Congo. Al came to love the enormous county and its people.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, LaRae Owens, and a son, Kerry John. He is survived by a brother, Gaylon "Butch" Albertson (Pat), of Burns, Oregon; a sister, Nadine Bergeson (Denzel) of Idaho Falls; five children, Debbie Bryce (Clarence Springsteed), Kenny Albertson (Barbara), JoAnn Bailey (Jerry), all of Pocatello, April Gabbert (Keith), Francie Albertson (Benjamin Palma), Bruce Porter, Jerry Porter (Julie), Bob Porter (Nih-Luh), all of Washington, Sandy Snyder (Mike) of Salt Lake City, Utah; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Al touched the lives of everyone he met and he will be greatly missed. But as he embarks on his new adventure to "find out where the wind comes from an where it goes," he will be remembered for his generosity, his sense of humor, his passion for life and his wild and wonderful spirit.
The family would also like to extend special thanks to Tommy, Shane and Kim at Idaho Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care, and to Devon Boyer for the peace and serenity he brought to Al in his final moments.
Online condolences can be sent by visiting www.DownardFuneralHome.com or e-mailing them to [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Al's name to a local charity.
A memorial service and picnic is being planned for Saturday, Sept. 13 at Centennial Park from noon until 5 p.m.
