Son of Charles Lemuel and Eunice B. (Barcus) Styer. Brother to Charles E., Jack, Robert, Roy, Anna, Patty, Dorothy, Helen, Jane, Donald, James J., and Virginia Styer.

After growing up in Marion, John moved to Mount Gilead where he had lived for nearly 60 years. He was employed for H.P.M. as an erector for 42 years, until his retirement on February 28, 1991.

On November 23, 1967 he married Doris George in Mount Gilead.

John was in to various forms of woodworking. From the detailed carving of his daughters and nieces doll furniture to the much larger scale of helping build his home. No carpentry job was too large for him to tackle.

He also loved the peaceful solitude of the outdoors, spending hours in his gardens. John did not discriminate, having numerous flower and vegetable gardens.

John lived in Mount Gilead until the time of his passing. He died at the age of 79, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

In addition to his wife he will be missed by his daughters Susan Styer of Providence, Rhode Island and Judy George of Cardington; step sons Ken (Shirley) Fissell of Deland, Florida and Gene (Barb) Fissell of Ocala, Florida; grandchildren Grace, Tim, Annie, Donna, Shawn, Tonya, Ginger, Steve, and David; 10 great grandchildren; brothers Jack of Marengo, Robert (Bonnie) of Reynoldsburg, and Roy of Mount Gilead; sisters Anna Hankins of Johnson City, Tennessee, Patty (John) Graves of Reynoldsburg, Dorothy (Dean) Emmons of Cardington, Helen (Dale) Bowersmith of Mount Gilead and Jane (Ralph) Bartlett of Mount Gilead; sisters-in-law Pauline Styer of Mount Gilead and Ethel Styer of Mount Gilead.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two great grandchildren; his brothers Donald, Charley, and James; his sister Virginia in infancy; and his sister-in-law Phyllis Styer.
