Joseph Nelson Wilkinson is the son of James W. Wilkinson and Frances Cain Wilkinson. Joe married Mary Susan Varnom on November 5, 1885, together they had one son John Willie Wilkinson and Epsie Rebecca Wilkinson. Joe enlisted in the Confederate Army. Joe rose to the rank of SGT. of Co. K of the 22nd GA. Inf. He was captured at the battle of Gettysburg July1-3, 1863. He was released on parole on April 30, 1864. He was then wounded in the shoulder at Petersburg, VA. July 30, 1864 during the battle of the Crater. Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant found himself stalemated in front of the formidable trenches protecting Petersburg, the rail junction that supplied the Confederate Capital. Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside's Ninth Corps tunneled under the Confederate lines filling the galleries with gunpowder. This resulted in the Civil War's worst massacre! Joseph's father fought in the war being wounded and captured, Joe's brother Robert was in the same unit, Co.K of the 22nd Regiment of the Confederacy. And his younger brother George E. Wilkinson died from his wounds on August 10, 1862 after only 3 months after enlisting.
