The son of James W. Wilkinson and Frances Cain Wilkinson. Ruffin married Lucy Ann Cook the daughter of Ephraim Cook and Malinda Keen Cook, November 22, 1866. The Wilkinson and Cook families were some of the first settlers in Henry County. Ruffin volunteered May 8, 1862 to the Army of the Confederate States and was with Company E of the 56th GA. Regiment. Ruffin was captured at Champion Hill May 16, 1863 by the army of the Tennessee and sent to Memphis. He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware during 1862 and 1863 and suffered from a chronic illness and was released. He soon returned to his unit and fought at the battle of Missionary Ridge in Oct. of 1863 he was seriously injured when a shell exploded near his head. His injuries were so serious he was never able to return to the war. Ruffin and Lucy had six children together.
