Robert is the oldest son James W. Wilkinson and Frances Cain Wilkinson of Henry County, GA. He married Elizabeth S. Christian October 22, 1868 in Henry Co. near Stockbridge. His family was of the first families of Henry County, his mother and father came from Virginia and settled in the Shake Rag area in the mid 1820's. Robert fought in the War between the States enlisting in Sept. 1861. He was in Co. K of the GA. 22nd Regiment surviving the war and Typhoid Fever. Robert's Unit was part of The Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. Lee. Robert was at Appomattox Court House, which was the name of the town at that time. After tempting to break-out of the union envelopment, Robert E. Lee surrenders to the Army of Norther Virginia and to Ulysses S. Grant. The home of Wilmer McLean became the meeting place for the surrender. Ironically Wilmer McLean's previous home was in the middle of the first battle of Bull Run by the Army of Northern Virginia and used as a hospital. Appomattox drew its name from an Indian village discovered by Captain John Smith. It was originally founded at Clover Hill but by the time of the Civil War the name appeared on maps as Appomattox.
