Bob and Gloria McDonald were married January 29, 1942, in Everett, WA before Bob was sent to the Aleutian Islands. She was an Army Air Corps wife until 1945. After the war, she and Bob and their first son, Robert Jr., moved back to Reno. After moving to San Francisco for Bob's attendance at USF Law School the family returned to Reno for good.
Gloria studied art under Craig Sheppard and pursued her passion for painting and the arts. She was appointed to the Nevada State Arts Council by Governor Mike O'Callaghan and served the state from 1971 to 1981.
Bob and Gloria had four children. As a homemaker and devoted mother, Gloria enthusiastically supported each of them in their individual pursuits, forever sending them books, clippings and humorous pieces from her daily perusal of the news. Gloria's grandchildren knew her as a quick witted observer of daily life with an ironic sense of humor and great comebacks. Her sardonic commentary on current events and politics will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bob McDonald. She is preceded in death by her eldest son, Bob McDonald Jr. Surviving children include Martha McDonald (Joe Wagner), Tim McDonald (Becky) and Peggy McDonald (Dennis Montgomery); grandchildren, Molly McDonald, Casey McDonald, Tom McDonald, Katie McDonald, Peter, Caroline and Vanessa Wagner, and Anne, Rosemary and Alice Montgomery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 3, 2008, from 5 -7 p.m. at Walton Funeral Home, 875 W. 2nd St., Reno, with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Our Lady of the Snows, 1138 Wright Street, Reno. Entombment at Our Mother of Sorrows will follow the Mass. A Celebration of Gloria's life will be held at the Eldorado after the services.
