The January and February 1865 Muster Roll recorded him as having died January 4, 1865, at Beaufort, South Carolina from the wounds he received at Balls Ferry, Georgia on November 23, 1864. The Muster-Out Roll stated Smalling died July 14, 1865. His actual date of death was January 4, 1865. Smalling's name appeared on the November and December 1864 Hospital Muster Roll for the USA General Hospital (New) (Division No. 1) in Beaufort, South Carolina, stating he was attached to the hospital December 20, 1864. When George W. Smalling was reinterred in the Beaufort National Cemetery, a Confederate tombstone was erroneously erected on his grave. The author advised the Veterans Administration about this error and they asked for copies of his military records to prove he was in fact a Union soldier. The author ordered the certified documents from the National Archives and submitted to the Veterans Administration but they have refused to replace the tombstone for this loyal citizen soldier who has been buried under false colors for over 150 years.
