Private William C. Shannon, a carpenter from West Chester, Pa. Enlisted at age 30 on Sept. 23, 1861 for 3 years in Company F, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He died of typhoid fever on Sept. 7, 1863 and was buried on Morris Island , South Carolina, near the ruins of the lighthouse destroyed by the enemy, his grave being marked with name, company and regiment.
