Son of the late Andrew Cleveland Shackelford, Sr., and Bessie Cox Shackelford, he was a graduate of Chocowinity High School. He served with the U.S. Navy. He married Margaret Allen on July 27, 1953. She preceded him in death on October 26, 2003. He was a tool room supervisor with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and owner/operator of G. W. Shackelford Bus Line until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of Elizabeth Chapel Church of Christ, Orr Lodge #104 AF & AM, Beaufort County Shrine Club and was a charter member of Blounts Chreek Volunteer Fire Department. He was survived by four daughters, Kim S. Barr (Jay), Taynya S. Burnham (Todd), Jan S. Butrswinkas (Joe) and Brenda S. Leistner (John); three sons, Brad Keith Shackelford, Andrew Charles Shackelford (Irene) and George Winston Shackelford (Gerri); twenty grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandaughter,
Stacy Shackelford; a great-grandson, Ethan Michael New; four sisters, Ethel Corey, Letha Elizabeth Clark, Annie Mae Lamb and Minnie Mae Fitzpatrick; two brothers, Andrew Cleveland Shackelford, Jr., and Charlie Jay Shackelford; and extended family of relatives and friends. His funeral was held September 2, 2008, with Marty Alligood officiating. His burial was with Masonic rites.
