In the year 1862, eighteen year old George died as a recruit in the Confederate Army, when he contracted measles on the march to Memphis for training. He is buried In the Confederate Soldiers Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. George was in G Company; 20 Ark. Infantry

George was the son of John Shanberger and Elizabeth Heckert Shanberger. His sisters were Younda Louisa, Elizabeth Anne who married Joel W. Barrington who also fought in the Civil War and moved to Arizona , Catharine Sarah, Margarette. His two brother's were John H., and Henry J. Shanberger. His parents were from Germany and moved to Arkansas not too long before the Civil War.
They later moved to Prescott, Arizona. They had lost all their boys before they left Arkansas.
