Daniel H. Aasen, 90, was graciously granted the gift of peacefully departing from his earthly body on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, surrounded by his family at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. After many years of gracefully dealing with the challenges of chronic pain, this was a gift much appreciated.
Dan was born May 31, 1918, to Oscar and Agnes Aasen near Eleva. Dan was no stranger to hard work, raised on a farm near Eleva. He and his brother, David, delivered the now famous Silver Springs horseradish door to door. He was employed by Uniroyal Tire Co. for 42 years until he retired in 1980. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on Jan. 14, 1946. He served in various locations in the military police unit and was, as he referred to himself, "the best darn cook in the Army."
He met the love of his life, Ruth Harwood, in Milwaukee while on military leave. They were married on April 20, 1946, and were completely devoted to each other during their more than 62 years of marriage. Dan showered his family with love, attention and security. Many precious memories were made during many years of boating, water-skiing and camping in "the bus." Many summers were spent in northern Wisconsin, most notably at Lake Owen, making new friends and being a family. Dan would allow the family to camp, even when he was working, commuting from Eau Claire on his days off.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery; grandson, Cole Exner; parents, Oscar and Agnes; and his sisters, Ruth Hawes and Esther Bozart. He also was preceded in death by his beloved dogs, Smokey and Whimpy.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a brother, David, of Seattle; children, John Aasen of Las Cruces, N.M., Julie (Jim) Harnisch of Eau Claire, Michael (Carol) Aasen of Chippewa Falls, Janie (Scott) Exner of Lisle, Ill., and Tom (Toma) Aasen, San Diego; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private gathering with the immediate family was held in San Diego. A celebration of Dan's live will be held at a later date in Eau Claire.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Toma Aasen for the sacrificial and loving care she provided to Dan for the last several years of his life.
Friends may offer condolences online at www.fullerspeckien.com. Condolences also will be forwarded to the family in California if sent in care of M. Aasen, 1415 Wheaton St., Chippewa Falls, WI 54729.
