The son of William Whitfield Gillies and Coila Emila Kenyon, both of Trempealeau, Wisconsin, Bob was born in Santa Cruz, California. He became one of the early pioneers of the sport of surfing, while later in life, Bob worked toward having a surfing monument erected in Santa Cruz to commemorate the history of surfing in this ocean community. It was through the promotion of surfing through music and film that the community of Santa Cruz became known world-wide as a surfing town. Bob is remembered for his quick wit and his keeping his commitments to others.
