Mary Maria was born to John Stockham (1811-1866) and Mary Crawford (b1812) in Illinois. The family had moved from Kentucky to Van Buren County, Iowa in 1838, and then to Illinois shortly after. The Stockham family knew the Jones family from their early Campbell County days in the 1820's and 1830's, and the families moved to Iowa together. They met again in Kansas by 1856, and Mary later married Thomas Jones III, the son of Thomas and Levina (Lash) Jones. Thomas and Mary had at least 10 children. She died in 1885. Thomas and Mary share a stone, with inscriptions on three sides.
