Wet driving conditions were a factor in a single-car accident Thursday evening that claimed the life of a Pendleton High School senior.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said Chelsea Marie Parsons, 17, of 107 Bertha Drive, was traveling west on LaFrance Road around 8 p.m. when she went off the right side of the road, causing her to lose control of her 1997 Isuzu Rodeo.

The vehicle crossed back to the left side of the road, then continued down an embankment into a ditch. Ms. Parsons, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle, Mr. Shore said.

Paramedics discovered Ms. Parsons in the ditch after pulling out the vehicle, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, Mr. Shore said. She was pronounced dead at 9:57 p.m. at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Mr. Shore said autopsy will be performed today to determine whether Ms. Parsons, who was heading home from her boyfriend's, died from drowning or from injuries sustained in the accident.
PENDLETON, SC — Chelsea Parsons lived by the words of Henry David Thoreau.

On her bedroom wall, just above her ocean-colored floor, hung a message board where she wrote these words: "Always maintain a kind of summer even in the middle of winter."

Whether she knew the words came from Mr. Thoreau's book, "Walden," where he writes about the joys of solitary, simple living, is unknown. But talk to anyone who knew Ms. Parsons — a 17-year-old Pendleton High School student — and it is clear she was always living as if the sun was shining, the air was warm and life was a beach.

She played volleyball. She was a varsity player for her school's soccer team. Photo after photo of her at her parents' house show the longhaired brunette soaking wet from the ocean.

"Chelsea was just one of these children that was especially talented," said Marcia Stow, who works with Chelsea's mom. "And she loved to have fun."
