Martha Ellen "Nellie" (Legette) Barnes was raised by her mother's parents in South Carolina. After her mother Martha died in 1857, shortly after Martha "Nellie" was born, husband John left for Texas, where he died in 1908. He took a few of the older children with him.

Martha "Nellie" married James Holt Barnes in 1874. They had seven children:
Annie E. (1875-1949), married Edgar Poe Easterling
Elinor "Ella" (1876-1906), married Charles Irby Sherrill
Elizabeth "Bet" (1879-1966), married John Hampton Adams
James Holt (25 Nov 1881-12 May 1889)
Nellie E. (1884-1918), married Charles Irby Sherrill
Margaret "Magie" (1887-1963), married Aiken Lawrence Heustess
John Legette (1890-1918), married Bessie Livingston
