Evelyn K. Abernethy, 65, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 3, 2008. Evelyn was born in Gastonia, N.C., to Harold and Dorcas Kelly. She graduated from Winthrop University with a degree in education and married her high school sweetheart. She traveled to Italy, Europe and across the U.S. as a Navy wife and mother. She was a dedicated teacher for more than 30 years. Before retiring, she was a reading specialist for Norfolk Public Schools. Evelyn loved teaching. But more than that, she loved the children that she taught. She wanted every child to cultivate a "love for reading." She loved music, Colonial Williamsburg, and of course her children and grandchildren. Evelyn is survived by her husband of 44 years, James Robert Abernethy Jr. (U.S. Navy, retired); her two children and their spouses, Scott and Merri Jo Abernethy, Christopher and Wendy Diehl and her three grandchildren, Lauren, Miles and Kelly. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. The burial will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association or Holland Road Baptist Church.
