David Hampton Sherrill was born in Statesville, Iredell County, NC in 1830 to unknown parents. He moved to Union County, NC by 1850, where he was employed as an apprentice millwright in the home of Josiah Cuthbertson, a physician. It is thought that Hampton had some formal college education, as he enlisted in the Civil War, as a Sgt. in 1862 at the age of 32. In Catawba County, NC he enlisted in Co. "K", of the 63rd Regt. NC Troops. Also enlisiting in this company were John Nelson Sherrill and Moses W. Sherrill.

After the War, David married Sallie Smith, a daughter of Peter and Mary "Polly" Smith of Marlboro County, SC. The Smith family had land holdings on both sides of the NC-SC state line, so it is unknown if David met Sallie while in NC or SC. By 1870, David and Sallie Sherrill lived in Marlboro County, SC. There were two children born to Sallie and David, before Sallie died in 1873. Mary Janie was born in 1869, and Charles Irby was born in 1872.

After Sallie died, David married Susan (Ely) Welch, widow of Richard Welch. A son Joseph was born to them in 1879.

David was baptized by the Rev. George M. Boyd and joined the Hebron Methodist Church. The family continued to live near Hebron until David died in 1895. After his death, Sue went to Florida where their son Joseph had recently moved.

SHERRILL - Mr. D. H. Sherrill was born September 1830 (ink smudge). He married Miss S. A. Smith - November 22d, 1868. On the 18th of July, 1872, his wife died, and on the 18th of January, 1876, he married as his second wife Mrs. S. T. Welch. On the 6th of January, 1888, he was stricken with paralysis and never recovered from this attack. He died January 30th, 1895. While attending a meeting at Hebron church, Blenheim Circuit, in August, 1886, conducted by Revs. Geo. M. Bey and T. C. O'Dell, he was deeply convicted and as a trembling penitent went to the altar and there realized that God for Christ's sake had pardoned his sins. His conversion was bright. He was a happy man, and he and all his friends rejoiced together. His life subsequent to this change evinced the genuiness of his conversion. He loved to enjoy the society of Christians and delighted in attending his church.
Although he suffered six and a half years from paralysis he would as often as he could go to church and enjoy the services. To life's latest moment he was steadfast. He never murmured amid his sufferings, but would often say to his wife and friends 'the Lord knows what is best for us'. Thus he lived, and when the summons came he was ready to depart in peace and enter into the rest that remains for the people of God. L. M. Hamer
