Benny LeRoy White, 71, of Arco, passed away at his home on June 16, 2008. He was born May 21, 1937 to Gene and Dorothy Vipperman White, in Tunupa, Idaho in Lincoln Couny between Gooding, Idaho and Shoshone, Idaho. His family moved to Gooding, Idaho where he attended school. He graduated from Gooding High School in 1956. Benny served three years, from 1956-1959, in the Marine Corps, and was stationed in Japan. He graduated from the State Barber College in Boise, Idaho. Benny opened a Barber shop in Arco and raised his family there. He married Bonnie Ronell Lemke on May 29, 1960, they were later divorced. The children of that union were Tim White and Cindy White Bledsoe.
He is survived by a son, Tim White, of Idaho Falls; a daughter, Cynthia (Jack) Bledsoe of Jerome; a brother, Carl White of Sandy, Utah; two sisters, Clara Jean Olsen of Nevada and Eunice (Garrold) Neiwert of American Falls; and two grandchildren, Jacob Climer and Sarah Climer. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Darrell White.
The picture submitted for the obituary was taken by a traveling photographer from Baltimore, Maryland. This picture won Smithsonian's Second annual photo contest with more than 30,000 entries. It was printed in the Smithsonian Magazine in July 2005. Below, on the same picture is a picture of Benny in his Marine uniform, he was in his early 20's.
