Transcriptions in the Maine Veteran Cemetery Records incorrectly show this veteran's date of death as July 12, 1892. Numerous errors in these transcribed records have supplied erroneous data to many of Maine's Veterans' memorials in Find-a-Grave. While the transcriptions were a labor of love, researchers are encouraged to find as many original records as possible to substantiate the information in FG memorials and/or Maine Veteran Cemetery Records transcriptions.

The correct information for John W. Ames is in the original records (his admittance file to the Togus Home and the stone cutter's tag for his monument).

James W. Ames enlisted into Company H of the 22nd Massachusetts Volunteers on September 6, 1861 and was discharged March 14, 1863 with a gunshot wound to the left arm.

James was first admitted to the Togus Home on July 1878 at the age of 50. He identified himself as single and next of kin his sister, Sarah Ames, of Haverill, MA.

James was in and out of the Togus home on a number of occasions, last admitted on December 3, 1892. He died there on July 12, 1901 of croupous pneumonia.

He is shown in the 1900 US Census at the age of 71 as a resident of the home. His parents were also born in Massachusetts.
