James W. Ames enlisted into Company H of the 22nd Massachusetts Volunteers on September 6, 1861 and was discharged March 14, 1863 with a gunshot wound to the left arm.
James was first admitted to the Togus Home on July 1878 at the age of 50. He identified himself as single and next of kin his sister, Sarah Ames, of Haverill, MA.
James was in and out of the Togus home on a number of occasions, last admitted on December 3, 1892. He died there on July 12, 1901 of croupous pneumonia.
He is shown in the 1900 US Census at the age of 71 as a resident of the home. His parents were also born in Massachusetts.
