Dorothy N. Wells Maves, 88, of Frazee, died on Saturday, July 12, 2008 in Diamond Willow Assisted Living, Detroit Lakes.
Dorothy Norma Ryder was born the daughter of Jim and Lydia (Janke) Ryder on April 18, 1920 in Dead Lake Township, Otter Tail County. The fourth of seven children born into the family, she was delivered at home by her father's mother, Esther Butler, who happened to be the local midwife.
At the age of five, Dorothy moved with her family to a farmstead in Rush Lake Township, where she grew to adulthood. Her younger sister and family still live on the same acreage. Dorothy entered the first grade at District 267 in Rush Lake Township. At the age of 14, she roomed in Perham with her siblings to attend high school, and was the youngest member of Perham High School's 1937 graduating class.
On June 20, 1938 Dorothy married Alvin Wells in a small ceremony at Bagley, Minn. Alvin and Dorothy had started first grade together at District 267 before Alvin transferred to District 128. During the early years of their marriage, they lived with Alvin's parents, and then in a little house built on his parents' acreage until it burned in 1948.
During those years, Dorothy did bookkeeping for the Richville Creamery, until it closed in 1945. She also raised chickens and turkeys and helped with the cattle and farm work. She worked for Cal Mielke at his General Store in Richville, clerking and candling eggs, and later candled eggs at Tillman Produce in Perham. Alvin died in 1970.
On June 8, 1975, Dorothy married Alvin "Babe" Maves at the United Methodist Church in Perham. She moved to his farm on Highway 54 near Frazee, and became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She loved the rural life. During her marriage to Babe, Dorothy worked, bussing tables at the Holiday Inn Dining Room in Detroit Lakes.
Dorothy was an avid gardener; nothing pleased her more than planting, harvesting and preserving fruits and vegetables and creating beautiful flower gardens, unless it was feeding and watching the birds attracted to her yard. The birds, flowers and country living continued to sustain her for several years after Babe's death in 2000.
Surviving Dorothy are her son, Jim (Karen) Wells of Richville; two daughters, Dolores (Brad) Woods of Perham and Mary (Reuben) Jaeger of Benson, Minn.; a stepson, Charles (Donna) Maves of Frazee; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a sister, Sue (Bob) Wagner of Richville; a brother, David (Evelyn) Ryder of Detroit Lakes; a brother-in-law, Al Rieniets of Moorhead; two sisters-in-law, Hazel of Thief River Falls and Ethel Maves of Frazee; and numerous nieces and nephews, forming a large extended family with whom she liked to keep in touch.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents; both of her husbands, Alvin Wells and Alvin Maves; a step- daughter, JoAnn Maves; two brothers and their wives, James and Lorine and George and Veery Ryder; two sisters, Hazel Rossberg (and her husband Ernie) and Vivian Rieniets; husband Alvin Wells' siblings and spouses, Ervin and Arvilla, Alfred and Esther Wells, Goldie and Bill Grover and her husband; Babe's siblings and spouses, Roy and Marie, Ralph and Lester and Dorothy Maves, Web Maves and Evelyn and Ernie Kurth.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at in the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, continuing for one hour prior to Thursday's services in the church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, with the Rev. William Aufdenkamp officiating.
Burial will be in the Richville Cemetery, Richville. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furey Funeral Home, Frazee.
