Former Ponsford resident Norman F. Blakely, also known as O'Kitch-ah-Daa or "Warrior," 70, of Cass Lake, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Neilson Place in Bemidji.

Norman was born the son of Simon and Rachel (Sailor) Blakely on March 22, 1938 in Cass Lake. He was raised in Ponsford, and later worked in the ironwork industry. After his retirement he enjoyed going to the casinos. He returned to the Oak Point Community in rural Cass Lake in 1999, and lived there until his death.

Surviving Norman are his children, Barbara Basswood of Pine Point, Patricia Basswood of Strawberry Lake, Norman Basswood of Pine Point and Blaire Rognstad of Rochester, Minn.; a brother, Phillip Blakely of Cass Lake; a sister, Linda Niemi of Menahga; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Preceding Norman in death were his parents; sisters Maxzine, Cordelia and Betty Blakely; and brothers Louis and Simon Blakely, Jr.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, July 19, at the Old Pine Point School in Pine Point. A wake will begin Friday, July 18 at the Old Pine Point School and continue until the time of service on Saturday.

Casket bearers will be Malcolm Norcross, Kevin Tejohn, Melvin Goodman, Ralph Goodman, Anthony Clark and Clarence Clark.

Interment will be at the Breck Memorial Episcopal Cemetery in Ponsford, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
