Esther Alice Harvey, 87, a longtime resident of Lake George, died at the Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji Tuesday, July 15, 2008.

She was born July 16, 1920 in Villard to Henry and Emma (Stuefen) Johannsen. At the age of 5, she moved with her family to a farm near Lake George, where she attended school. As a young woman, she did domestic work for several area families.

On Jan. 10, 1939, she married Jerome Harvey. In 1948, she worked cleaning cabins. In 1951, she began working as a cook at Douglas Lodge in Itasca State Park and continued until her retirement in 1987.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George where she was very active in church work. She was also active in the Lake George Garden and Senior Citizens clubs. She served as president of the senior citizens for five years. For five years she was in charge of the senior meals at the Senior Center. She also served on the Hubbard County Board on Aging. In 2003 she was voted the outstanding Senior Citizen of Hubbard County.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley (Lyle) Zubke of Lake George; her son, Gerald (Barbara) Harvey of Lake George; her daughter-in-law, Joyce Harvey, also of Lake George; her sister, Lorraine Qualley of Lake George; sister-in-law, Florence Johannsen of Lake George; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Robert; grandson, Jason; sister, Agnes; and six brothers, Ed, Jack, Lester, Walter, Ray and Marvin.

Visitation: one hour prior to the service.

Funeral: 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George with Rev. Don Kirchner officiating. Karen Lueth will be the organist.

Honorary casket bearers: her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers: Dale and Kevin Zubke, Jeff, John, Craig, Michael, Richard and Joel Harvey.

Interment: Lake George Cemetery.
