Elmer E. Lachowitzer, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, July 25, 2008 at his residence.

Elmer was born to Alex and Florence (Hoffman) Lachowitzer on Oct. 26, 1922 in rural Vergas. He grew up and worked on the family farm near Vergas. He moved to Detroit Lakes and became a resident at Lakes Homes in 1980. Elmer worked at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes through the Green Thumb Program, and also at the DAC in Detroit Lakes. Elmer loved to play the accordion and harmonica, collect Allis Chalmers tractors, and go out for coffee and pie at the 59er. He will be sadly missed by his housemates and the staff at Lakes Homes.

Surviving Elmer are two sisters, Ruby Buchanan of Bossier City, La., and Evelyn French, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother, Donald Lachowitzer of Jacksonville, Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services.

Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery in Detroit Lakes. The staff of Lakes Homes will serve as casket bearers.

West-Kjos Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes is handling arrangements.
