James R. Stockham was born in 1868 to John Albert Stockham (1842-1883) and Sarah E. Johnson (1845-1925) in Newton County, Missouri. When James was young, the family left Missouri on the Oregon Trail, arriving in Wallowa County, Oregon in 1876. They made their home in the Paradise and Enterprise areas.

In 1895, James married Lucinda Isley, daughter of James Isley (1825-1893) and Melvina Pennington (1849-1915). They moved across the Oregon-Washington border in Asotin County, where they took up a homestead and farmed. They raised four sons: Guy, Samuel, Frank and John. The family remained in Asotin, where James died in 1917. Lucinda later moved to Walla Walla, where she died in 1932. GPS: 46.3282667,-117.0549833
