Raymond G. Bortz, 78, of Park Rapids, formerly of South St. Paul, died Saturday, July 19, 2008 at his home near Big Mantrap Lake.

He was born March 10, 1930 to Gustave and Evelyn (Krech) Bortz in St. Paul. He attended school in South St. Paul, participating in all sports and graduating with the Class of 1948.

As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from September 1948 to September 1951. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to South St. Paul and worked for the Swift Meat Packing Co. in a career that spanned 19 years until the plant closed in 1969.

In May 1951, he married Muriel Rogers. From 1970-76, he worked for the F.O.K. Warehouse in South St. Paul. In 1976, they came to the Park Rapids area and he went to work at the Wonewok Conference Center. For 13 years, he worked at Wonewok as a recreation guide, taking guests fishing, golfing and on other recreational outings.

On Nov. 9, 1991, he married Astrid J. Trout at First English Lutheran Church in Dorset and they have lived since on the north side of Big Mantrap Lake.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Linda (Mike) McMorrow of Park Rapids, Gayle (Dave) Brodt of Pequot Lakes and Pamela Albee of Park Rapids; three stepchildren, Liz McDermott and Deborah Palumbo, both of Hudson, WI and Owen Trout of Brainerd; two sisters, Fladella "Mikky" McCullough of Bemidji and Lucille Bendickson of St. Paul; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 25 at Riverside United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Light officiating.
