Floyd Archie Pulju, 73, of Menahga died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids.

He was born April 10, 1935 on his parents' farm in Shell River Township, east of Menahga, to Matt and Mary (Torvinen) Pulju. He attended Dist. 43 country school near his home. He went on to attend high school in Menahga, graduating with the Class of 1953.

As a young man, he worked in the iron mines of northern Minnesota. Later, he returned to Menahga and worked at the Coop Store.

He enlisted in the United States Army and was based in Germany from 1954-56.

On Aug. 18, 1957, he married Eileen M. Berglund at First English Lutheran Church in Menahga. They lived in St. Paul where he worked for the Remington-Rand-Univac Co. full-time while attending the Northwest School of Electronics, also on a full-time basis.

He graduated in 1960 and began working for the Honeywell Corp. as a computer technician. That same year, they moved to Spring Lake Park. His career with Honeywell spanned more than 37 years until his retirement in 1997. Since retirement, they have spent their winters in Mesa, AZ. In 2001, they returned to Menahga.

He was a lifetime member of the Fridley VFW Post where he served as Post Commander. He was very involved with cooking at all the VFW fish fries, helped with the steak fries and was very involved with the Special Olympics.

Surviving are wife; his daughter, Lori Gardas of Crystal; two sons, Gregory (Griselda) of Plant City, FL and Jeffrey of Longmont, CO; his brother, Richard (Sheila) of Cold Spring; his sister, Irene McLaughlin of Chisholm; six grandchildren, one great-grandson and numerous nephews and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Colleen Eiler in 1997.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight (Wednesday) at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24 at First English Lutheran Church in Menahga with Rev. Steven A. Bruer officiating. The organist will be Barbara Ahl. A soloist will sing "Wind Beneath My Wings."

Casket bearers: Jerry Wisuri, Ervin and LeRoy Lake, Roger Lindroos, Clyde Burlingame and Jack Bloomquist.

Interment: Jim Cook Cemetery east of Menahga.

Military honors will be provided by the Guy L. McDermeit VFW Post in Menahga under the command of Willie Davis.
