Some records show birth to be between 1750 & 1753, but original stone indicates age of 86 at death in 1835. Majority of genealogists name his parents as Sarah Hassam & Ezekiel Allen, although some researchers name Eleanor Hurlburt and Ebenezer Allen as parents. His name has been listed as Jonathan Harsham/Hassam Allen in reference to his mother's maiden name of Hassam.

He married Margaret Hoffcut at Dover, Duchess County, New York in May 1770 and migrated to the Manchester Vermont area about 1771.

U.S. Military records (May 1774) confirm he served in the Revolutionary War. Served as a Private in Captain Gideon Brownson's Co, Col Seth Warner's Regiment, and was in the expedition to Canada. He was wounded in the battle of St. John, was engaged in battles at Hubbardton, Bennington, and Saratoga, being discharged in the fall of 1777. Pension application gives death date of 17 March 1836 rather than 1835 as stone indicates.
