Ernie L. "Kas'' Miller, 81, of Elgin, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, in his home.
A graveside service will start at noon Wednesday at Highland Cemetery at Cricket Flat outside of Elgin with Dale Johnston officiating.
Everyone is invited to participate in the horseback and automobile procession, which will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the crossroads of Good Road and Matten. There will be a branding of the casket at the funeral; people are invited to bring their branding irons.
Public visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande, and from 11 to 11:45 a.m Wednesday at the cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born May 23, 1921, to Alva J. and Lula Lovell Miller in North English, Iowa. Mr. Miller was an avid collector of bear traps, axes, Winchester guns, coins, carpentry antiques and wood tools. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a charter member of the Turtle Association, a forerunner of the National Finals Rodeo Association.
Mr. Miller served in the United States Army during World War II.
He married Elizabeth "Betty'' Boag in 1956 in Douglas, Wyo. She died on July 2, 2000. He moved to Elgin from Battle Mountain, Nev., on May 15, 1969. He married Peggy Jean Beckett Ruple on Aug. 19, 1989, in Cricket Flat. She died on Jan. 29, 2000.
Survivors include his children, Peggy Blumhagen of Fredrick, Md., Mathew and and Deborah Miller of Parkman, Wyo., David and Teresa Miller of Elgin, Kathy and Ken Andrews of Sheridan, Wyo., Dan and Peggy Heckenlaible of Belgrade, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; four sisters, Frances Scheiblein of Hemet, Calif., Bertha Milota of Lowden, Iowa, Glena Massler of St. Louis and Rosemary Cook of Temple, Texas, and nieces and nephews.
