When he retired from the service as a Lieutenant Colonel, he taught school as a special education teacher. They were living in Palm Desert, California at that point.
Elmer was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint, which he joined as an adult. His wife Lorna was descended from early pioneers of the Church, but Elmer was the only member of his family.
