Jim Chancellor was the son of John Cooper Chancellor and Sarah Jane Trickett. He married Laura Benge on September 17, 1899, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Jim and Laura moved to Texas before the October 1913 birth of their son, Joe Chancellor. They "forded the Red River in a covered wagon" when they moved to Delta Co, TX, where they were sharecroppers until about 1930.
