Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Kovacicek of Avella, Pennsylvania attended John F. Kennedy Catholic School in Washington before moving on to Bishop Canevin High School in Pittsburgh, where he lettered in hockey. He continued to play hockey after enrolling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was in his third year of study pursuing a degree in criminology. He had enlisted in the military in 2003, two years after he graduated from high school. Kovacicek arrived in Iraq in March and had been expected to end a tour there in October. He represented a second generation of service to the Marines. His father, Joseph Kovacicek Jr. of Washington, is a veteran of the Vietnam War. His passions included golf, skiing, hockey and making people laugh. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Washington. Deceased are his maternal grandmother, Barbara Krajacic; and his paternal grandfather, Joseph Kovacicek. Ryan died while engaged in combat with the enemy in Hit, Iraq at age 22.
