Her mother, Willena Pearl Stripling Webb, died when she was born. She was raised by her step-mother, Mantie D Hooks Webb, the 3rd. wife of her father E. J. Webb.

She needed glasses as early as age 5 years, the year she started school. She was only 4' 9" tall and known by family and friends as "Pearly Gates."

As a young girl she wrote articles for a Waco newspaper called "Dots for Downville" and "The Listener" reporting on the social activities of the community of Downsville, Texas.

She attended Baylor University in Waco and majored in music, but did not pursue a musical career. Instead, after her first marriage ended she attended and graduated from the Karen National School of Shorthand, Waco, Texas in 1923. She use this unique alphabetical system along with her speed typing of over 100 words a minute for a successful secretarial career, which began in Waco, Texas. She certainly would have loved the modern day computer.

She moved to Austin, Texas in 1926. and worked for the State of Texas. She married again in 1927 and for a short time was a homemaker, but returned to the working world as a legal secretary, which continued until shortly before her death in 1960.
