Austin's father, Henry Hiram, served in the Civil War and was captured October 29, 1863 at the Battle of Lookout Mountain. He was sent to Rock Island Prison in Rock Island, IL, where he died March 19, 1864 and was buried on the grounds of the prison.
After his father's death in 1864, Austin went to live with his grandfather, William A. Bingham, in Chickasaw Co., MS. Austin was an only child.
