Jewell Allie Norman was born in Pontotoc, Johnston County, Oklahoma. She and her twin sister, Youell, barely survived infancy. She told of their grandfather putting them in a shoebox together and placing them in the oven for warmth. Youell (Ashford) is also buried in Rosedale Cemetery.
Jewell Izard was known to many as "Ma." She and her family took in many foster children and she also provided day-care for many children in her home. She was a dedicated Christian, a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ada and later Evangelistic Temple Church.
