Roman Catholic Saint. Alfaro born Ezequiel Moreno y Díaz OAR., is the patron saint of cancer disease. Joining the Order of Augustinian Recollects on September 21, 1864 at Montegudo, Navarra, he took his solemn vows at the early age of sixteen. Leaving Spain for the Philippines as a missionary, he was ordained priest in Manila on June 3, 1871. Appointed apostolic vicar of Casanare, Colombia, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Pinara from Archbishop Bernardo Herrera Restrepo on October 23, 1893. Named bishop of the diocese of Pasto, Columbia, on the following December 2, he was noted for his charitable efforts towards the faithful of his diocese. Passing away of cancer at Montegudo in his native Spain, he was beatified on November 1, 1975 by Pope Paul VI and later canonized on October 11, 1992 by Pope John Paul II in Santo Domingo. His liturgical feast day in held on August 19. Saint Ezequiel's blood brother Julián, who was likewise a member of the Augustinian Recollects, was martyred in Motril during the Spanish Civil War and is venerated as a blessed.
