SMITHFIELD – Evelyn Dare Leggett White, age 76, of Carroll Bridge Road, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at her residence. She was a native of Martin County, N.C. and worked as a line worker for General Electric from 1971 to 1985. She was a member of Whiteheads Grove Baptist Church, the Tidewater Bluegrass Music Association since 1990 and the American Legion Woman's Auxiliary. Her husband, James Watson White; parents, Gertrude Bowen and Charlie Hyman Leggett; brother, Curtis Hyman Leggett; sisters, Erma Ruth Whichard and Lois Marie Wages; and companion, Clark Howard Insley preceded Mrs. White in death. Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Darlene Bell and her husband, Lynn, of Smithfield, Patricia Anne Jarvis and her husband, Lewis, of Portsmouth, Wanda Faye Griffin and her husband, Dave Griffin III, of Chesapeake; sister, Christine L. Whitehurst of Midlothian, Va.; brother, Leamon Edward Leggett of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Janet Lynn Bell, David Erle Bell, Elizabeth Ann Jarvis; two step-grandchildren, Emili Griffin, Laura Griffin. The family would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Brown for their devoted love and support. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, Smithfield, with the Rev. Russell O. Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in Colonial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 98 Kilby Shores Drive, Suite #100, Suffolk, VA 23434. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
