Retired U.S.A.F. CMSGT George Harrison Chappell Sr., 81, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Waverly, where he was a member of Waverly Baptist Church, he had been a Peninsula resident since 1952. The World War II and Korean War veteran honorably served his country 22 years, retiring at Langley Air Force Base in 1962. Following his military career, CMSGT Chappell was employed with the United States Civil Service at Langley Air Force Base for 12 years where he also was a volunteer at the Langley Air Force Base Hospital pharmacy. An avid hunter, he was a member of the Waverly Hunt Club. Preceded in death by a son, Wallace Holmes Chappell, Mr. Chappell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lucille J. Chappell; one daughter, Linda C. Hancock and her husband, Wade, of Hampton, two sons, George H. Chappell Jr., and his wife, Naomi, of Hampton and Robert W. Chappell and his wife, Margo, of Carrollton; five grandchildren, Douglas L. McLane Jr., Robert W. Chappell Jr., Meredith H. Chappell, Bradley H. Chappell and Rebecca A. Chappell. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton by the Rev. David W. Burgess of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. in St. Luke's Memorial Park at Benn's Church in Isle of Wight County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. They will be at home at other times.
