The Prelate Emeritus of Illapel, Chile, Monsignor Cirilo Polidoro Van Vlierberghe OFM., died at the venerable age of 97, on the morning of Tuesday, May 9, 2006.

Polidoro Van Vlierberghe was born in Waesmunster, Belgium, on March 6, 1909, joined the Franciscans in Tielt in 1927, and ordained priest aged 25, on August 19, 1934, through the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor. A long time missionary in Chile, Friar Polidoro was installed as Apostolic Administrator of Illapel on March 18, 1961.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Prelate of Illapel on June 27, 1966, receiving his episcopal consecration as Bishop of the Titular See of Municipa on August 28, from Archbishop Alfredo Cifuentes Gómez assisted by Archbishops Emilio Tagle Covarrubias and Bernardino Piñera Carvallo.

The Monsignor resigned his titular see on November 17, 1977 and retired from his prelature on August 11, 1984. He died after 71 years of priesthood. His solemn funeral Mass was celebrated at the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Luján followed by interment at Illapel's prelature church. Originally buried in front of the main altar, a few months later his casket was removed to a definite spot once a burial space intended for him as well as his successors was finished inside the same edifice.
