After graduating from the Florence State Teachers College (now the University of North Alabama), John A. Thompson, Jr., became assistant principal of the Eclectic High School in the town of Eclectic, Elmore County, Alabama. The principal was E. A. Potts, at least for a while. In January 1887, Johnny writes to his brother Robert:
"Dear Bobbie… Well, I am left 'alone in my glory.' Potts has resigned and I have been elected Principal – school is very small at present on account of measles – I teach all by myself and find I have my hands full… Miss Casey left too, her music school got so small it would not pay, so she had to leave, so I am alone… It is going to be pretty lonesome but I will find pleasure in my books and the study of nature… ."
John A. Thompson, Jr., died on 17 October 1889. He is buried in the Gresham Cemetery at Mars Hill. His obituary says,
"We are pained to announce the death on Monday of Mr. John A. Thompson Jr. at his home at Mars Hill. He was a son of our former capable Circuit Court Clerk, the late John A. Thompson, and was a young man of bright mind and excellent attainments. He was only 21 years of age, graduated in 1886 with honor, at our state Normal School; and went to teach in Elmore County, whence he came home to die, with that dread disease, consumption. The clods of the valley never fell on the bosom of a better boy than he."
