John's father died while in Aberdeen when John was just a young man. John then sailed (from probably England) to the US. He then took the long journey across the country in a wagon landing in the Boise area where he took up mining according to census records. He saved enough money mining the area for about a year. He then went back to Scotland to gather his mother (Margaret Skinner Wilson) and his fiance (Margaret Simpson). With his family in tow he then made the long journey back to the New Meadows area and settled down in his new homeland to start his family.
