Peter is the son of Henry and Unknown mother Winters. He was about 23 when he wrote to his brother William that he was living in Grayson Co., TX, but would soon be going to CA to find his fortune. He was living in Secret Ravine mining camp in Placer Co., CA when he met the girl he was to marry. Rachel Cash, Rachel and her twin sister were orphans that came to CA with their uncle. Rachel and Peter were married and had two girls, Sarah Elizabeth and Mary Ellen. It was a hard life in the camps.
Rachel died in 1861 and soon after Peter enlisted in Union Army in San Francisco. He was stationed at Fort Crook in Shasta Co., Ca. Peter mustered out in SF, CA in 1864 and moved his girls to Hat Creek, Shasta Co., CA. When John Walker moved to Hat Creek with his family, Peter sold him his land and married his step daughter Pheobe Jane Chapman just barely 14. Peter then moved his family a short distance to Oak Run, in Shasta Co. and there he raised the first two, plus the 12 that he had with Pheobe! Peter was a farmer and teamster. Peter suffered a stroke two years before he died leaving him completely disabled and unable to care for his youngest children. Pheobe spent all their money and sold their home to care for Peter. When he died in 1899 she had nothing left. Life was very hard for this mother, but she managed with the help of her older sons, William, James and Charles.

his 1st child was born in 1854, his last in 1893...39yrs apart!

Peter served in Co. C, 2nd California Cav.--Civil War and was stationed at Fort Crook near Fall River Mills, CA
