Emma B. Bacon Briggs was born 18 September 1799 in New York, USA, and was the daughter of Lemuel Brown and Polly Mary Haskins Bacon. Emma married Spencer Palmer Briggs of Washington County, New York, USA at sometime prior to 1813. Spencer Palmer Briggs was born 16 October 1787 in New York, USA; died 19 October 1865 in Hartford, Washington County, New York, USA. Spencer was the son of Jeremiah "Jeremy" and Grace Palmer Briggs.

NOTE Concerning Spencer. There is another Spencer Palmer Briggs, Birth abt 1793, lived most of his life in Paris, Oneida, New York, USA. He died 2 August 1865 and is buried in Sauquoit, Oneida County, New York, USA. Paris is several counties away from Washington County, and following the places lived in it is clear these are two different Spencer Palmer Briggs. This Spencer Briggs married Sarah "Sallie" Caroline Lamb Briggs. By documents the Spencer who married Emma was listed as a private in the War of 1812. Reading the documents closely this Spencer, who is the husband of Emma, is listed as filing for his pension in 1855 at the age of 68, and this makes him born in the year of about 1787. Also, the P written for Spencer's middle initial is clearly a very fancy written P, and is P for Palmer. The Spencer who married Sarah "Sallie" Caroline Lamb Briggs was born in 1793 according to his headstone. He lived most of his life with his wife Sarah in Oneida County, New York. These are clearly two very completely different men, and clearly it can be said they are not the same person. Neither men had two wives living in two homes several counties away from each other. These two Spencer Palmer Briggs were likely cousins, as some of the people related to the Spencer of 1787 are buried in a Lamb family cemetery, but this by no means can prove the two men are one in the same when other documents as well as geographical locations prove otherwise. Please read the documents closely when researching your ancestors. When the document photo is available please read the actual document. Often it contains more information which reveals who the document actually refers to. Pay attention to geographical information. Be aware documents can have misinformation, such as one listing Spencer of 1787 being born in Vermont while all other documents are stating he was born in New York in the general area where he lived. The area where Spencer of 1787 was born and lived out his life is near Vermont, but it is clearly in New York.

Known children of Samuel Palmer and Emma B. Bacon Briggs:
1) John J. Briggs, born 11 May 1813, in Washington County, New York, USA; died 13 March 1900 in Newbern, Jersey County, Illinois, USA. John married Jane Eliza Graham Briggs before the birth of their first child in 1833. Jane Eliza Graham Briggs was born 23 November 1815 in New York, USA; died 30 October 1890 likely in Newbern, Jersey County, Illinois, United States.
2) Amanda Malvina Briggs Sweet was born 31 MAY 1819 in Fort Ann, Washington County, New York, USA; died 22 February 1905 in Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA. Amanda married Alanson Sweet on 6 September 1838 in New York, USA. Alanson Sweet was born 1812 in Canada; died 21 April 1870 in Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA.
3) Laura Aurelia Briggs Beebe, born in about 1829 in New York, USA; death is unknown. I could find little information on Laura. She married John D. Beebe, born about 1822 in New York, USA, died 1 March 1895 in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin, USA.John and Laura married prior to 1846, and in the 1850 Federal Census they were living in Chester, Warren County, New York, USA, with their two children: Charles A Beebe, age 4; and Emma Beebe, aged 2. By the 1855 census Laura was found living at home again with her parents in Fort Edward (village), Washington County, New York, USA, and only has her little daughter Emma listed living with her. There is no listing for little Charles. No further records have been found in my search for little Charles, and he likely died after 1850 but prior to 1855. After 1855 there are no records listed for Laura and Emma that I have found. Perhaps Laura married again, and little Emma was adopted by her new father, but this is mere speculation and not proven documented fact at this time. Also, on the 1855 Census Laura is listed as being the stepchild of Spencer Palmer Briggs, but this is likely an error on the part of the record itself. Also, on this census Spencer is listed as being born in Vermont while all other documents I found for him are listing his birth place as New York, so again I believe Vermont may be an error on the part of the census worker.
4) Joseph H Briggs, born 13 November 1841 in New York, USA; died 14 May 1892 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, USA. Joseph married Mercy E "Mary" McQuilkin Briggs, born 15 March 1850 in Indiana, USA; died 18 July 1933 in Lake Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA, where she was living with her daughter Nellie B. Briggs Sandos. Joseph and Mercy married on 14 Sep 1871 in Vigo County, Indiana, USA.

Emma spent the remaining of her later years with her son Joseph, and passed on to be with our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ on 23 August 1877 in Indiana, USA. May our beloved Emma rest peacefully.
